RAMONA CONVENT SECONDARY SCHOOL

Ramona is a private Catholic college preparatory school for girls located in Alhambra. Established in1889 by the Sisters of the Holy Names, it is one of the oldest continually operating schools in the same location in California and has graduated over 8,300 students. Today, more than 5,400 alumnae located throughout the world serve their communities both professionally and personally.

Robert Maxwell has been on the faculty of Ramona Convent Secondary School since 1992. He teaches both beginning and advanced ceramics in addition to calligraphy. His ceramic classroom doubles as a working studio where he produces new work, donating some of this output to the school’s annual fundraising event.

According to Maxwell, about 98% of the Ramona students are accepted to colleges and universities and many graduate with honors and/or full scholarships. These days, few high schools offer a fully-staffed art department. The ceramic objects created by Maxwell’s students testify to the value of the instruction they receive.
